Final Boat Project- Boat Building Day

Your boat MUST be built by you, not parents (parents can hold and suggest but it is your boat).

    

Your boat must be:

    - Waterproof--- never sinks or soaks up water

    - Float--- never sinks

    - Stable on the water--- doesn't tip to one side

    - Able to carry a load--- able to carry at least 1 apple

    - Propels through water --- able to travel 2 lengths of the bathtub at least

   

In your video recording please talk about the following before you show your boat in the tub:

  1. What is your boat made out of?  

  2. What are the parts of your boat? (use scientific words)

  3. What does each part do for your boat? Why did you decide to use that material for that part of your boat?

  4. How will your boat move through the water?

  5. What is the best part of your boat?

  6. What would you change about your boat to make it better?

To record your video, clip on the Green plus (Flipgrid) link. Click on sign in with Microsoft. Use your Teams Login (Username is your school email address and Password is your Student Number) 

   

Make sure to speak loudly, and slowly enough for the viewer (Mrs. Fuller) to be able to understand you.

Sink like a Stone experiment- take a floater like a cork or a Styrofoam ball and find a way to sink it without putting your hands in the water. 
Be sure to make a hypothesis before you start your experiment.  What do you think will work to sink your floater?

Float your Boat experiment- take a Sinker like a medium sized rock or a heavy washer and find a way to make it float it without putting your hands in the water.

Plasticine Ship Transporters-
Before the Experiment:  Think of what kind of boat you would like to make with your plasticine.  Draw your boat in your Hypothesis box.  Make sure to colour and label your drawing. 
During the Experiment: Using pennies or small blocks... try to see how much weight your boat can hold.  Make sure to count every penny you put into your boat.  The number you boat can hold is the amount BEFORE it sinks. Record the number of pennies your boat holds.  
Make adjustments to your boat to try to make your boat better.  Try again. 

Conclusion:  What made your boat so good?

- Float: something that rests (stays) on top of a liquid (water) and doesn't sink.
- Sink: something that goes below the surface of a liquid (water) and stays down.

Shape Up or Ship Out

Hypothesis- Predict which bottles will float and which will sink. (glass with cork lid, glass with no lid, plastic with lid, and plastic with no lid). Draw a picture with labels in the correct boxes. 
Observation- Slip your rectangle into four sections. Draw in each section what you see happening when you try to sink or float your bottle.

Conclusion- What do all floaters have in common? 
  All the floaters are filled with air and are buoyant.

Row Row Row Your Boat-Song
Tin Foil Transformers

Hypothesis- Predict how you will transform a sheet of tin foil so that it will sink.  *Remember you cannot add anything to your tin foil or put your hand into the water.* 
Observation- Draw a picture of what your tin foil looked like when you were able to sink it. 
Conclusion
- How did you sink your tin foil? I made my tin foil smaller and I squished the air out as much as I can.

- Space Boots-  How can we keep our astronauts feet warm and safe during their time on Mars.
Today we planned our space boots:
- What do you want them to look like? 
- How will you make them warm to keep the astronauts feet warm? 
- How will you keep them tight on the foot so they don't fall off?

  
Rules for your Space Boot
1. You have to be able wear your shoe inside your space boot.
2. Your space boot must be able to take 10 steps without falling off (or you adjusting it)
3. It can icy on Mars, can you make your boot non-slippery. 

When you are finished: Click on Flipgrid (or scan the qr code) and record a video explaining how you built your boot and of you taking 10 steps in your boot.  ( Password is Mars123! )

- Safety In extreme temperatures-  How can we keep ourselves warm in extreme cold temperatures?   How can we keep ourselves cool in extreme hot temperatures?
- Create a Poster showing at least 4 ways to keep yourself cool in hot temperatures and warm in cold temperatures.  For specifics, look at assessment grid in science booklet.

- Hot and Cold Temperature- Final Assessment- Show what you have learned throughout the unit.  Don't forget to do the back side.

- What is the best insulator?  Experiment
- Boil Water, Pour water into 4 containers with lids, wrap each container in tin foil, cloth, newspaper, or sock.. Make sure you cover all sides and top/bottom.
- Wait 30 minutes
- Take the temperature of each container
- Which material is the best insulator?
- What does it mean to be a good insulator?

Feb 8
- Using our knowledge of what is the best insulator?  Create a Thermos using two containers of your choosing- they should be able to close. Put an insulator in between your containers.  Boil your water and test it out (wait 30 minutes and take the temperature.)
Did your thermos do a good job of keeping your liquid hot?
What could you change to make it better?

Day 2 Building your own Thermos
- What worked well yesterday?  What didn't work well?  How can you make your thermos better?

** Remember the closer your water stays to 100ºC the better.  That means it is doing it's job!

Water Spill Cleanup Experiment 
- Hypothesis- How much time will it take for the water spill to dry?
- Experiment-
1. With coloured water create a small "spill" on a plate. Draw a circle around the spill
2. Set timer for 5 minutes. 
3. Repeat the steps 1 and 2
4. With a blow dryer, blow dry your spill.  Draw a circle around the spill after drying for 5 minutes. 
-Observation-  What do you see happening-  draw/colour what you see
-Conclusion-  Give 3 real world examples of using heat or wind to dry

Crazy Colourful Celery Experiment 
- Hypothesis- What will happen when the celery is placed in coloured water?
- Experiment-
1. Place the celery in coloured water (blue or red is best)
2. Leave for two days. 
-Observation-  What do you see happening-  draw/colour what you see
-Conclusion-  What happened to the celery? Why did it happen?

Paper Cups Experiment 
- Hypothesis- Predict if the different papers will be waterproof or absorbent by putting an X in the correct box. 
- Experiment-
1. Create cups of wax paper, tissue paper, tin foil, construction paper, writing paper 
2. Place your cup into a container (tub) and pour water gently into your cup.  Does it hold the water or does it leak?
-Observation-  Colour the box- waterproof or absorbent
-Conclusion-  Which types of paper could you use to make a good umbrella?

- Experiment- 1. In a tall see through container pour in the following liquids into the center of the container. 1. Liquid honey 2. dish soap 3. whole milk (if you have some)
-2. Pour in the following liquids down the side the container using a turkey baster.
          1. water (with food colouring) 2. vegetable oil 3. rubbing alcohol (with food colouring)
